TRACK: Disaster Medicine
This will be a panel discussion immediately following a code orange mock scenario. Panelists will provide context to the challenges of coordinating mass casualty response, specifically as it relates to interoperability with prehospital personnel.
Learning Objectives:
- Review the principles of triage in Mass Casualty
- Discuss barriers to effective coordination of response
- Highlight ways in which emerg physicians can engage their administrations and advocate for change
- It’s amazing what you can accomplish when you don’t care who gets the credit
- Stakeholders need to be engaged from the start: how to make friends and keep them
- Triage strategies are a moving target… in order to know how to prioritize care, you need have a solid understanding of how your hospital works (yes, this means homework)

Dr. Willmore is an academic emergency physician in Ottawa, where he dedicates much of his time to his role as Medical Director for the Department of Emergency Management at The Ottawa Hospital. His interests include prehospital care, transport medicine, disaster medicine, and interprofessional curriculum development.

Dr. Vanessa Cardy
Dr Vanessa Cardy is a family physician who has spent her career working in rural and remote environments. She is currently a staff physician at the Chisasibi Hospital. a regional centre serving the James Bay Cree population of northern Quebec. She is also a deputy editor for EM:RAP and associate managing editor to Right On Prime (medical education podcasts).

Dr. Lee is passionate about medical education and emergency medicine with a focus on supporting physician practices to optimize safe medical care delivery and patient safety. She is a Physician advisor with the Safe Medical Care Division, CMPA and practice Emergency physician at the Ottawa Hospital.
Dr. Lisa Calder
Dr. Lisa Calder is a trained emergency physician and patient safety researcher who is an Associate Professor at the University of Ottawa’s Department of Emergency Medicine and Affiliate Investigator with the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute. She is currently the Director of Medical Care Analytics, a patient safety research unit at the Canadian Medical Protective Association.
