MRSA in the ED: Update for 2019 - Dr. Heather Murray

Description: MRSA – Who has it? Who should be treated? Do all patients with abscesses get Septra now? When should I send cultures? Let’s look at the evidence and untangle the thorny issues surrounding MRSA and the ED doctor.

Learning Objectives
At the end of this presentation, participants will be able to:

  1. Understand cure rates for skin and soft tissue abscess in the ED with/without antibiotics.
  2. Be able to select appropriate antibiotics for skin and soft tissue infections based on prevalence and resistance.
  3. Use their own hospital’s antibiogram to determine their regional approach to MRSA.

Pearls

  1. Skin abscess cure rates are high with I+D alone (even if MRSA pos).
  2. Skin abscess cure rates can be improved with Septra and *some* patients should receive it in addition to I+D.
  3. Knowing your regional resistance patterns (the “antibiogram”) is essential for practicing with a careful antibiotic footprint.
